Automated execution and logging of safety final-element proof tests (partial-stroke testing, full-stroke testing) without manual technician intervention.
AI-assisted dynamic risk scoring for ESD/SIS
Analytics that continuously reassess a safety instrumented system's real-time risk reduction — factoring in bypasses, degraded redundancy and process conditions — rather than relying solely on the static SIL calculated at design time.
Short entry. This page summarises our current placement. Full, sourced analyses are published first for the technologies closest to practical use; see the list of full analyses.
How it works
A safety instrumented function is designed to achieve a target risk reduction, verified by calculating its average probability of failure on demand from assumed failure rates, test intervals and architecture. That calculation is done at design time and revisited periodically. Day to day, the real situation moves: a sensor is bypassed for maintenance, a proof test is overdue, a redundant channel is in fault.
Dynamic risk tools read that live status from the safety system, the maintenance system and the bypass log, and recompute an estimate of current risk reduction for each function. More ambitious versions add process conditions and equipment health predictions. The output is advisory: a view of where protection is degraded and where several impairments coincide.
Why it matters
Could give safety engineers a live view of actual, current risk exposure instead of a point-in-time design assumption, particularly valuable during maintenance and bypass windows.
Where it fits
Related practice exists already in the form of barrier-management dashboards, used particularly offshore to show the status of safety barriers. The AI-assisted version would matter most to high-hazard sites managing many simultaneous bypasses and deferred tests, as decision support for permit and maintenance planning. It sits outside the safety function and does not alter how that function is designed or certified.
Why we place it at the Emerging Idea stage
Concept papers and early vendor roadmaps exist; functional-safety standards bodies have not yet defined how a dynamically-scored SIS would be certified or audited. Estimated time to the Proven in Use stage: 10+ yrs. What the stages mean.
Key risk
IEC 61511 and related functional-safety frameworks were not written with continuously-adapting risk models in mind — expect this to move only as fast as the standards catch up.
Questions to ask before committing
- Is the tool clearly separate from the safety system, with no ability to write to it?
- What data feeds the estimate, and how current and complete is each source?
- Could a favourable score be used to justify extending a bypass or deferring a test, and who would approve that?
Standards and terms to know
- SIL
- Safety integrity level, the band of risk reduction a safety function is required to achieve.
- PFDavg
- Average probability of failure on demand, the measure used to verify a SIL for low-demand functions.
- Barrier management
- Systematically tracking the condition of the safeguards that prevent or mitigate major accidents.
